Since we live such a nontraditional retirement lifestyle in the Abacos during the winter months, many people have asked what we do for entertainment. As you have read in previous postings, we spend a lot of time beachcombing, reading by the pool, playing board games, basket making and cruises to the out islands and cays.
In addition, we attend many of the monthly activities that are organized by members of the RMHYC. This posting shares some of the events we attended this season.
Major social functions include Christmas Party, Chili Cook off, Commodore’s Ball and Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. Other events include meatloaf night at Jamie’s Restaurant, Veggie Car Race, Fish Fry with member’s catches, Craft Exhibit, and various rendezvous to other islands/cays.
Below is a summary and pictures of the events we attended this winter.
Commodore Ball
The theme for this year’s Ball was Hawaiian. The commodore serves a two-year term and this year was the changing of the guard.
Craft Exhibit
We really have some super talented individuals in the RMHYC and many who are willing to share their expertise with others. A Craft Exhibit is held to display crafts that individuals have created or are working on.
Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration
A corned beef and cabbage dinner/dance was sponsored by RMHYC. For $15 each, we had dinner, open bar and dancing. One of the RMHYC member’s was the DJ.
Barbeque and Limbo Dancing at Jib Room
RMHYC sponsored an event at the Jib Room, which is known for their barbeque ribs/steak, rake’n scrape band and limbo dancing. The club members have to practice their limbo dancing to keep up with the Bahamians.
Snake Cay Beach Cookout
A beach cookout was organized at Snake Cay, which is about five miles south of Boat Harbour. We took our dinghy into the shallow area behind the Cay looking for stingrays and turtles. We saw both, but the turtles were too quick to capture by our camera. The guys made a fire for cooking hotdogs on sticks. It was a fun time, except for the bugs that came out while we were eating. None of the traditional bug sprays helped and we were forced to return back to boats quicker than planned.
Man-O-War Fair
Man-O-War Cay has an annual winter fair, which is like a big tag sale. In addition to used items, handmade crafts are for sale by both Bahamians and Cruisers. Also available is all kinds of homemade Bahamian food. RMHYC organizes a ferry to pick members up at Boat Harbour for the event.
We already have the schedule for RMHYC social events for next season. Each one has a theme and are assigned chairpersons. This was our second year as a Club member and we participated in more activities and got to know a lot more members. Looking forward to many more winters in the Abacos.
