February and March Highlights, 2012

Can’t believe it is the end of March already!  In addition to doing some cruising to the out islands, we have had many events that have kept us very busy.  Below I have highlighted the major events.
Commodore’s Ball
The Commodore’s Ball takes place the second week in February.  This year’s theme was the Roaring 20’s.  The party chairpersons did a great job of decorating the huge tent where the ball took place.  Several folks went all out with their dress.  A fun time was had by all.

Arts and Crafts Exhibit
The RMHYC Arts and Crafts Exhibit provides all members an opportunity to display their creations.  This year, we had the opportunity to learn water color painting, which was taught by one of the members who is a retired art teacher.  About twenty members took advantage of this opportunity and displayed their paintings.  We displayed our pine needle baskets and sea glass jewelry. Every Thursday during the season members gather to work on their projects and share their expertise or learn how to do something new.

Lisa and John’s Visit
John and Lisa’s two-week visit was fun.  They spent a lot of time lounging around the pool at Abaco Beach Resort.
They were lucky to be here for a Barefoot Man Concert (Bahamas' Jimmy Buffet) at Nippers on Guana Cay.  They have been listening to one of his CD’s with songs about the Abaco’s since their first visit.  The concert is held on a Friday afternoon and is crowded with cruisers enjoying food, drinks and dancing to the music.  The morning after, Lisa and Diane met up with Barefoot Man having coffee at one of the pubs and he posed for a picture.

St. Patrick’s Day
The shortest parade in the world was held in Marsh Harbour on St. Patrick’s Day.  It started at Memorial Park and went to Snappas Bar, where corned beef and cabbage was served and Irish music was played by a local band.  Many RMHYC members joined in the parade, some of the women wore some interesting T-shirts.  A free drink was given to all who participated in the parade.

We took Lisa and John on a cruise to Little Harbour, which is the southern most point of Great Abaco Island where we cruise.  One of the RMHYC couples purchased a house in Little Harbour, where we had dinner and enjoyed their wonderful views of Sea of Abaco, Little Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean.  We also had dinner at the famous Pete’s Pub, which is located on the beach.  We viewed the Blue Hole in the area and looked for treasures on the beaches.  We saw lots of sea turtles and a few sting rays, one of which swam around our boat then jumped about 10 feet above the water.
On the way back, we stopped at a new restaurant, Firefly, which is located on the Sea of Abaco on Elbow Cay to have lunch.

Social Committee Co-Chairpersons
The big reason that we have been so busy is that we have been appointed Rear Commodore’s of the RMHYC with responsibility for the social events for next season.  In addition to the huge learning curve of this responsibility, we had to line up party chairpersons for the major events, develop the 2012-13 social calendar, attend RMHYC Bridge (board) meetings and become involved in the development of a new website.  This has been a very interesting experience and very time consuming.  We are hoping it will be a rewarding experience next season!
Going South
We are now getting ready to head South for about five weeks with a buddy boat, Time Out.  Our travel plans include Eluthera, Nassau, and Exumas.  We plan to leave Abacos, weather permitting, around March 31; return to Florida the first week in May and back to CT mid-May.
During this time, we will not have internet coverage every day.  Our plan is to stop in areas that offer WiFi when we are near them.   Time Out has a SPOT program which will send an email to Lisa and John when we arrive at a new location.  We also have a new Bahamian smart phone, which should give us more opportunity for internet access and phone calls where towers are available.
We look forward to this experience, since many cruisers have told us that it is a must see.  We will send emails when we can on our experience and do a Blog update once back in the states.
